so i'll be picking me up,
breaking me down,
breaking me down,
The rain was pouring from the clouded heavens at a pace that was quite simply outstanding, sending thousands of droplets of gleaming translucent liquid into small puddles that had formed in the patches where grass failed to grow, and only soil was to be found. The General, for he thought of himself as this despite the fact that he was no longer the leader of any army, gave a little snort of irritation at the levels of water splashing down on his soaked chestnut body, obscuring his vision and sending chills running through his limbs. He was more of a summer guy, and he did not take readily to the poor weather that he had experienced thus far in this new land. After a moment of flirting with the idea of running for cover, Duality took two squelchy strides forward, and took a ravished bite at a particularly tasty-looking clump of grass. Oh-so delightful. He closed his eyes in disgust, then spat out the foliage, nostrils flared in an unconscious reaction to the bitter taste. Well, they do always say that looks are deceiving.
Even as this thought crossed his mind, the General found another question plaguing his mind; a rather ridiculous question that he supposed was caused by some cold-induced hysteria that was forcing him to think like an idiot. Who are They, anyway? 'They' could be anyone, he reasoned as he glanced out across the field in search of a more appetizing meal. 'They' could be another horse, or a tiger, or even his hooves, for all he knew. Duality regarded his feet blankly, then cast the thought aside. It was too stupid to even contemplate. The giant stallion eventually settled for munching on a cluster of dandelion leaves that was growing somewhat randomly in a pool of mud. They were not the most delightful thing that the General had ever eaten, but, he supposed, this was to be expected. His opinion of this new land was, so far, very poor, and he did not expect that to change.
After a minute or so of fierce eating, Duality took a step backwards and closed his eyes, shivering from muzzle to tail. Despite the obvious things that were bringing him misery, the General could not help but feel a sinking depression at the thought of how his life was being affected by events beyond his control, and how he had lost all that ever meant anything to him. The giant stallion sighed, then lowered his head until his nose was barely a centimetre above the ground. He tensed every muscle in his body, then relaxed, in the same way that some humans meditate. After repeating the exercise a few times, he straightened up, and attempted to be optimistic about the path that his life was taking. "I am General Duality, and nothing can destroy me." He whispered the words to himself; words that had once inspired courage in his rotten heart. But why try to convince others when he could barely convince himself?
